African Pompano Information
African Pompano are found in warm coastal waters worldwide, thriving especially off Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean. Renowned for their mirror-like scales and powerful, deep bodies, they’re a favorite among anglers for both their spirited fight and their stunning appearance.
These fish are typically caught near reefs, wrecks, and ledges, often in 100 to 300 feet of water. While juveniles possess long, trailing fins that skillfully mimic jellyfish to evade predators, adults lose these filaments, developing a bold, armored, and sleek profile.
Though not true pompano species, they belong to the jack family (Carangidae). They can grow over 40 inches long and weigh more than 50 pounds. Their fast, hard runs make them an exhilarating catch, and their striking looks make them perfect for a custom mount.
